There are two main ways to use velvet bees as pollinators.
One is the breeding and establishment of their colonies in the crop and the second is the exploitation of natural populations.
This solution is mainly suitable for products with high economic value that are grown in greenhouses.
In this method, the colonies of this bee are presented to the greenhouse owners as an artificial nest or the same hive and then these hives are easily placed inside the greenhouse environment.
These commercial hives have four main parts:
Nest box : contains the real hive containing the babies (eggs, larvae and pupae).
This plastic box has different ventilation holes in the walls, lid and bottom.
Sugar container: This system is located under the nest box and contains 2 kg of food, which is enough for the life of the hive. Nectar is a source of carbohydrates (sugar) for energy.
When the flowers of a particular crop (for example tomatoes) do not produce nectar, they should be fed a supplemental sugar source.
Dedicated cover with expandable ventilation system made of durable and recyclable carton that provides complete protection of the hive.
Flight valve: This valve opens or closes with a simple rotation. The standard flight valve allows bumblebee bees to fly easily in or out of the hive.
The number of colonies required depends on the type of greenhouse, season, cultivar, number of plants per square meter.
In a tomato greenhouse, one colony is enough for about every 1,000 to 3,000 square meters.
Modern farming practices have been shown to reduce the population of velvet bees.
Extensive use of pesticides and pesticides has also reduced the population of these bees.
