For decades, humans have been using glucose traps to fight the uninvited guest of their bathroom and kitchen, the cockroach.
This method worked well for a while until the cockroaches changed their diet.
According to the British newspaper “Daily Mail”, it was the 80s when a home experiment in the kitchen of an apartment in Florida, USA, showed that cockroaches lost their sweet taste and their population increased rapidly.
- The researchers,who were surprised by this type of evolution of cockroaches, concluded in their experiments that many types of cockroaches no longer show a desire for sweet foods and do not like the sugary composition of corn syrup.
This process, which occurred as a defense process in the cockroaches, in less than five years brought the work to the point where the method of eradicating the cockroaches through the baiting of sugary substances lost its effectiveness.
The German cockroach (Blattella germanica) is evolving to have a glucose-free diet, according to new research from North Carolina State University (NCSU).
Jules Silverman, an entomologist at North Carolina State University, who discovered the cockroaches’ aversion to chlorinated compounds, says:
“Cockroaches are extremely attuned to their environment, and because of this, they have moved shoulder-to-shoulder with us humans in the battle for survival.”
Recent findings show that the evolutionary process has brought the cockroach to such a level of resistance that it is sometimes said jokingly that even in the event of a nuclear war, these insects will continue to live on the planet.
Apparently, the key to this less powerful than evolved cockroaches is the presence of special neurons that send warning messages to the brain about food.
In normal cockroaches, which have not yet been affected by this evolution, the sugar glucose stimulates neurons in the brain and sends the message of sweetness to the insect’s brain.
Meanwhile, in genetically mutated cockroaches, glucose activates the neurons responsible for bad taste so that the cockroach does not go to the prey and survive.
So far, this research has been conducted on small cockroaches known as German cockroaches and has not yet been conducted on large species of cockroaches, known as American cockroaches or kitchen and bathroom cockroaches.

German cockroach larvae are very infectious and can cause many diseases and infections.
Diseases caused by the German cockroach or cabinet cockroach are:

On the other hand, the external coating of cockroach eggs and German cockroach excrement, after decomposition into small particles, are suspended in the air and easily enter the body through breathing and cause allergies and asthma in humans, especially children.
High reproductive rate
The German cockroach has the highest reproduction rate compared to other cockroach species.
The female German cockroach produces, on average, one new egg capsule every month; Each capsule contains 32 to 48 eggs.

To understand the fecundity of the female German cockroach, suppose that half of the eggs produced in each egg capsule are female and each of these females produces forty-eight eggs within a month.
In this way, during a year, approximately 1,500,000,000,000,000 (1.5 trillion) cockroaches are produced from just one female German cockroach.
Of course, this happens only if the right conditions are met. Among these conditions are:
- Having enough food
- The right temperature
- presence of water
- Suitable hiding places
- Absence of any threat or predator
Cockroach food sources
The diet of cabinet cockroaches includes the following:
- carbohydrates
- proteins
- minerals
- Fats
German cockroaches are omnivorous, but prefer mostly fat and carbohydrates.
Cockroaches are very fond of contaminated industrial kitchens, especially around gas stoves, which are not easily accessible and clean, and are also a warm environment.
The fat in these areas also meets all their nutritional needs.
The importance of water resources
Research has shown that in the diet of cockroaches, the presence of water is absolutely necessary, and male cockroaches cannot survive without water for more than 3 days;
Females are slightly more resistant to dehydration than males. From this information, we conclude that cockroaches live mostly near water sources and usually in kitchens and bathrooms.
Cockroach behavior
Like most cockroaches, German cockroaches like to be touched on both sides, top and bottom.
This behavioral phenomenon is called “Tigmotropic” and it means that cockroaches prefer to be in narrow and narrow places, so they are found more in areas that have these conditions.
These areas are:
- Cracks and seams
- Grooves between cabinets
- Food paper envelopes
- Refrigerator door rubber

Cockroaches are nocturnal creatures and are not seen during the day, unless we are dealing with a large infestation of cockroaches.
In large infestations, the population of cockroaches is so large that all their shelters and nests are filled and the cockroaches have nowhere else to hide.
